DIY Clothespin Family Plaques

This blogpost was supposed to be posted tomorrow, but I promised I would post the giveaway earlier as soon as I reached my 100 followers on Twitter!

So HERE IT IS!

Mothers' Day is around the corner, and if you haven't decided what you are going to get to that special mother yet, check this easy project!

A friend of mine taught me how to do these amazing Clothespin Family Plaques. She made them as gifts for friends and family, and I did the same (of course I asked first if I could do it and she was kind enough to tell me what I needed to buy to do it myself).

So here I am today to show you how you can make these great and unique portraits that everybody will love! (And little ones can help, which makes it extra special)

First plaques I made for my family members.
The best thing is that you don't need to be a professional to do these cute plaques. You can buy the materials in any popular craft store. All my crafts are made with materials from Michael's.

Here is the list of what you will need:
  1. Clothespins (big for adults and small for children)
  2. Wood plaque [size depends on how many members (pins) the family has]
  3. Sand Paper (As pretty and smooth as the plaques look, they need to be sanded)
  4. Acrylic Paint (I bought the cheapest and worked fine)
  5. Plastic Palette (to mix colors)
  6. Paintbrushes (If you can, buy a set of different sizes) and/or sponges (I use the sponge to paint the plaque)
  7. Glue (Tacky Glue is fine)
  8. Plate Stand (or whatever you want to use to hang it or display it)[not in the photo]
  9. Plastic Cup with Water (to rinse the brushes after use)
  10. Washcloth or Paper Towels (to dry the paintbrushes after cleaning them in water)
Saving Tip: If you are going to do only one plaque, buy a small palette with all the colors; or if you are going to make more than one, instead of buying the palette or one bottle of each color you will use, buy only primary colors plus white and black. With a total of five bottles you will be able to get any color you want by just combining any of those.

First: Search for the photo you want to recreate. In my case this is the one I will be using.

Second: Decide how you want to arrange the pins

Third: Sand and then paint the plaque (I love white, but you can use whatever color you like for the background)

Fourth: While the plaque dries, start painting the pins (I recommend starting with the face just in case you mess it up you don't have to start all over again)

Top left corner: My little Piccaso abstract art!

Fifth: Paint the faces if you didn't at the beginning. I normally only make eyes and facial hair for those who request it (yeah, my husband's beard is missing here ha!)

Close enough (I may need to fix my sweater's color a bit lol!)

Anyway… Ta-DA! Here is the final product. After everything dries up, glue the pins to the plaque and place it on the plate stand or you wall.

The piece on the left was already made. It is a gift for a friend, but I photographed it so you could see how cute it was!
I personally like the dolls without face details, but the person's preferences were different in this case :)

See how cute? Wouldn't it be a nice gift? It could be for Mothers' Day, Birthdays, Anniversaries, Christmas, etc, etc…. :) I sold couple for Christmas and one for Mothers' Day. This is a gift that nobody else will have!

And guess what? A lucky person will have the opportunity to win a customized clothespin family plaque, white background, with up to five (5) pins (including cats and/or dogs). Enter below!

*Remember I need a photo to recreate it as clothespin portrait. Please, enter only if you agree to send a photo if you result as the winner*

(The photo will NOT be published and will ONLY be used to personalize the clothespins. I promise I will delete the photo from my email, computer and trash as soon as I finish the product. Pinky Promise!)
